So as most of you already know, we're pregnant! We made the decision to start a blog to keep our family members and friends up-to-date on all the "baby drama", since most live far away from us. We thought that a proper beginning would be to tell the story of how we found out, since this was most unexpected. I was at the doctor's office for my yearly physical and wanted a referral to a chiropractor. I was told that in order to receive a referral, I had to take an x-ray of my back to make sure there wasn't any "serious" damage. So after my quick exam, I headed downstairs with my husband in tow, and headed straight for the exit. Confused by actions, W asked me where I was going. We argued for the next five minutes about when I should have my x-ray done. He insisted that I get the x-ray done today since I was already there, but being a procrastinator by nature, I insisted that I could get the x-ray when I return in a few days for my blood tests. Ultimately, W won the argument and I went into the dressing room to change into the oh-so-fashionable blue gown.
As soon as I walked into the x-ray room, I was asked if I was pregnant, in which I responded with "nope". But the nurse was a little more thorough and asked when was the start of my last menstrual cycle. Due to my condition of PCOS, I had given up on keeping tabs on my cycle and had absolutely no clue. Wrong answer! I was then directed to change back into my clothing and march my butt upstairs to get a pregnancy test and bring back a note stating that I was indeed "not pregnant".
Grumbling an "I-told-you-so" to W as we headed upstairs, I was convinced that this little escapade was a big waste of time. I didn't need a note! I knew from many years of experience that I wasn't pregnant, and in fact, was sure that I couldn't get pregnant, and now I needed a note like a little 4th-grader! Right.
As I sat in their little room waiting for the "note", arms and legs crossed with annoyance, I was able to overhear the nurse in the lab performing the test. Not five minutes later, I heard her ask another doctor in the room to "come and take a look at this". My ears perked up a little as I heard the second doctor reply with "it looks positive" to which she responded with "That's what I thought, so I did the test twice." That couldn't be right! I must be getting the voices mixed up. I was sure that the lab was big and that there are a few doctors in there performing tests, and I must be listening to some other lucky case. No sooner had I convinced myself of this, the nurse reappeared in the doorway and happily announced that I was not able to take my x-ray due to the fact that I was indeed pregnant.
(Pause for shock!)
After about five minutes of trying to gain composure, I had the unreal task of telling W outside, who I knew would be just as shocked as I was. He did not disappoint. For no sooner did the words "I'm pregnant" slip out of my mouth, did a vacant expression appear on his face. At first, I thought he was so excited that words escaped him. But after a few minutes passed, I began to get a bit worried by his silence. Unable to take it anymore, I promptly smacked him on the shoulder and cried "Say something!" W then awoke from his state of trance and apologized saying that he was still in shock, but extremely happy.
So that's it! That's the story. Nothing too spectacular. But it's our story and we like it.
